Let's learn more about carpet

Traditionally, carpet was made of wool fibers that were woven together on a loom. Today, the vast majority of carpeting is a tufted carpet that is created by attaching fibers to a backing with a commercial machine. Haight Carpet & Interiors is a carpet store in Woodinville, Washington, that offers a wide selection of high-quality carpeting. We carry many top brands, including Wools of New Zealand, recognized internationally as a purveyor of the finest wool.

Carpet fibers like nylon, triexta, and more

While wool is the premium carpet fiber, it has largely been replaced by synthetic fibers. Man-made fibers are often less expensive and more durable and stain-resistant. They are also able to stand up to rigorous spot scrubbing and steam cleaning. Nylon has dominated the market for decades. This durable fiber can maintain its original look long after it's been installed and bounce back after heavy furniture has been removed. Triexta is a newer durable fiber that is inherently stain resistant. Polyester and olefin are also popular fibers. Consider soft and luxurious wool for bedrooms and tough synthetic fibers for high traffic areas in the home.

Carpet cut and loop pile

Durability is determined by carpet construction. It is always important to consider pile or density of the fibers and length of the individual fibers. These fibers can be attached to the backing in two ways. First, they can be bent in a loop, and second, the loops that are created can be cut at the top. The tighter the loops, the more resistant they are to crushing and matting. Cut pile is softer than loop pile. The tighter the twist, the more durable the carpet. Twist, or turn, is often noted by the manufacturer. The turn per inch, or TPI, generally varies from 3.0 to 6.0. Saxony is a traditional cut pile style that has a smooth and even surface. In contrast, shag is a deep cut pile that is shaggy in appearance.
