Durability is determined by carpet construction. It is always important to consider pile or density of the fibers and length of the individual fibers. These fibers can be attached to the backing in two ways. First, they can be bent in a loop, and second, the loops that are created can be cut at the top. The tighter the loops, the more resistant they are to crushing and matting. Cut pile is softer than loop pile. The tighter the twist, the more durable the carpet. Twist, or turn, is often noted by the manufacturer. The turn per inch, or TPI, generally varies from 3.0 to 6.0. Saxony is a traditional cut pile style that has a smooth and even surface. In contrast, shag is a deep cut pile that is shaggy in appearance.
